Tank Chime, Base and Annular Plate Corrosion Protection
The junction between the tank shell, the annular plate and the foundation is the shortest-lived detail on an above-ground storage tank. Rainwater runs down the shell and is retained in the chime, the foundation edge holds moisture and debris, and the steel moves relative to the foundation as the tank is filled and emptied. A rigid coating across that joint is loaded in a way it was never designed for.
Match the seal to the shell-to-foundation detail
A tank chime seal combines flexible profiling and a continuous corrosion barrier around the annular edge. Select the primer and mastic, industrial-grade petrolatum tape and outer layer together, using the actual joint width, movement and exposure.
Send tank diameter, edge dimensions, photographs, steel temperature and the condition of the existing seal. The proposal should define preparation, overlap and terminations as well as material quantities. Foundation instability or structural steel loss requires a separate engineering assessment before wrapping.

Storage Tank Base and Annular Plate
The junction between the tank shell, the annular plate and the foundation is the shortest-lived detail on an above-ground storage tank. Rainwater runs down the shell and is retained in the chime, the foundation edge holds moisture and debris, and the steel moves relative to the foundation as the tank is filled and emptied. A rigid coating across that joint is loaded in a way it was never designed for.
Corrosion risk
- Under-plate corrosion where water is held between the annular plate and the foundation, out of sight of inspection.
- Cracking and disbondment of rigid coatings and sealants at the dynamic shell-to-foundation joint.
- Concentration of corrosion at the chime edge, where coating thickness is hardest to control.
- Repair windows limited by tank operation — hot work is normally not permitted.
Recommended configuration
High-tack primer → elastic profiling mastic across the chime and foundation transition → petrolatum tape (industrial grade) → outer wrap selected for the exposure. The tape remains plastic, so it accommodates tank movement instead of resisting it.
Send us the asset, we will propose the system
Asset type, dimensions, operating temperature, exposure and estimated quantity are enough for us to return a system configuration, a material estimate and the supporting documents.
